All-
It seems I was more fortunate than some who have reported here. I was able
to receive good echoes on the 6792.5kHz frequency on January 19. Starting
at about 0505Z, a few minutes after the experiment began (and after those
who felt like they just HAD to transmit on the test frequency finally shut
up), I was able to hear the skywave signal easily at about S5-S7, and the
reflection (the echo) at about S3. The echo stayed very consistent until
about 0510 when the echo strength dropped to a nearly inaudible level. At
0512, it came back up but dropped again at 0513 and this up and down pattern
continued for most of the first half hour (Faraday?). At 0529:40 I noted
that the ground transmissions seemed to stop, then resumed at 0530:00. At
this point, the skywave signal was as strong as before, but the echoes were
much weaker and remained so until the exercise seemed to end at 0559:30,
when there appeared to be no more transmissions from the Earth and no echoes
were detected.
At 0500Z, the Moon here in Western NY (Lat 42deg, 35min, 44sec N and Long
77deg, 31min, 07sec W) was a couple of hours past Zenith.
At 0600Z, I couldn't hear the experiment on the 7407.5 frequency due to
strong interference from a foreign broadcaster nearby.
On January 20, I didn't stay up late enough to listen.
My antenna is a 204ft inverted vee fed with ladder line and a tuner, with
the apex of the vee at 60 feet, and my receiver is a Kenwood TS-690S with
500Hz CW filters in the first and second IF.
