Considered the WORST virus scanner currently on the market by the reviewers.

I use AVG Free Edition, Ad Aware and Spybot.  Also, if malware has 
infected your system, then it can be extremely difficult to 
remove.  It's like back to the DOS days where you had to boot from a 
clean floppy before disinfecting your system.  If you have your 
installation CD, you can make a boot CD to do just that (use a clean 
PC!) with virus scanners and other utilities.

Look up "Ultimate Boot CD for Windows" in Google.  It's a little 
fiddly to prepare, but handy to have a reasonably up to date one in 
your toolkit.  You do need your original XP installation files 
available to make it work (SP1 or SP2).  Not sure it's been updated 
for Vista yet.
